You’ve taken a missions trip. Your heart has been touched. Your mind has been changed. You’re eager to follow God’s leading to take His Gospel to the uttermost parts of the earth.

Perhaps you’ve already started deputation and are travelling full time. Maybe you love it, but chances are, it has been a challenge. Yet, you’ve been communicating a very personal call in your own language to people who think much like you do. The churches you’ve visited and the pastors you’ve talked to share, with you, the Bible as an anchor. They understand the need to spread the Gospel message.

What about the people you’re longing to reach with the gospel?

They speak a different language. The Gospel, to them, is foolishness. They have a different worldview. Their own culture has given them the answers to the questions of life, and it likely doesn’t involve a holy but loving God. Why should they listen to you? You’re a foreigner, and perhaps worse, an American. You cannot relate in the least to their life experiences and your message is in discord with everything they (and their ancestors) have known to be true.

So what do you do? How do you approach the herculean task of communicating Christ’s message to a Christless culture? Do you pack your bags and arrive bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, linguistically and culturally unprepared but hoping for the best?
